The Lion, the witch and the Legal Assistant â Part 1

The childhood maxim of “do not judge a book by its cover” rings true far into adulthood. When I first took the role at Pardoes I was warned by my new boss that she can be difficult but that any criticism was no reflection on me personally. I was so excited to have a job I didn’t really care that I could be potentially working for the Wicked Witch of the West or Miranda Priestly from the Devil Wears Prada.

When it actually came to a stressful situation such as having a letter returned to me for the tenth time after I thought it was perfect the first time round, I really truly hated it. I wanted to dump a bucket of water over her head to see if she really would melt away and I am sure she wanted to smite me down and whack me over the head with my ruby slippers. It wasn’t until I stepped back and realised she was being what I thought tricky because I had in fact done something wrong, I had misspelt a place name despite being asked to change it twice or had forgotten to send an email etc. She was also pointing out what I thought minute detail because she wanted to make me a better lawyer. It was for my sake not hers and I’m grateful as I wouldn’t be where I am today without her.
