The Marriage Statistics
Posted on 4 April 2017 by Siân Merriott
The Marriage Statistics for 2014 (the latest year for which they are available) have been published by the Office for National Statistics and show that the marriage rate has increased overall especially for the over 65s. People in this age group may have children from previous relationships and assets they have accumulated prior to the marriage which they wish to ensure go to their children, rather than their spouse,or their new spouse’s children, in the event of the marriage breaking down.
Peace of mind in this respect can be achieved in a civilised manner by the parties entering into a Pre-Nuptial Agreement (“A Pre-Nup”) which sets out what should happen to their assets in the event of the marriage breaking down. A Pre-Nup would help to avoid potential family problems in the event of a marriage breakdown by ensuring that the parties children do not feel cheated out of their inheritance or feel that the new spouse is taking advantage of their parent. It would also help to reduce prolonged Court proceedings in the event of any future divorce as it would be taken into account by the Court if it is correctly drawn up and entered into.
It is important that a Pre-Nup is correctly drawn up and Pardoes Family Team can help with this or any other family matter, please feel free to call us on 01823 446208.
It is also important to ensure that a Will is correctly drawn up so that in the event of death the deceased’s assets pass to the people they would wish to receive them. Pardoes Private Client Team can help with this and can be contacted on 01935 382680.
