Molly Guest, A time for reflection: A Six-Month Training Experience

Posted On 17 March 2025 by Molly Guest

As I move from my seat in commercial property law back into family law, I have had the opportunity to reflect on how much I have learned in a relatively short time. Commercial property law has provided me with an excellent introduction to the legal profession, offering me a solid foundation in various legal principles and practical skills that I will carry forward as I continue my journey.

During my time in commercial property, I worked on a range of tasks, including assisting with property transactions, negotiating lease agreements, and conducting legal research. I was involved in reviewing contracts, managing due diligence processes, and helping clients navigate complex legal matters related to real estate. This experience has sharpened my attention to detail, improved my ability to manage competing priorities, and deepened my understanding of client relations, allowing me to communicate effectively and deliver advice tailored to clients with diverse needs.

One of the key takeaways from this seat was the importance of precision and accuracy. Property law can be highly technical, and I developed an understanding of how even the smallest details can have a significant impact on the outcome of a transaction.

Now, as I return to family law for my final seat, I am excited by the new challenges and learning opportunities that lie ahead. Whilst the legal focus is different, the skills I have gained, particularly in communication, attention to detail, and client care, are just as vital in family law. The transition feels like a natural progression, as it allows me to apply my legal knowledge in a context where client relationships are often more personal and emotional.

I look forward to working on matters involving families, children, and sensitive issues that require not only legal expertise but also empathy and understanding. Family law directly impacts people’s lives in meaningful ways, and I am eager to develop my skills further in this area, with the goal of providing thoughtful, practical legal advice during challenging times.

Returning to family law feels like a full-circle moment, and I am excited to continue my development in this field. The experiences I have gained in commercial property will certainly enrich my approach to family law, and I look forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead. It has been a rewarding experience so far, and I am confident that my time in family law will contribute to my growth both professionally and personally.
